The foreground objects are worked in bas-relief stitches, all in black, but the sky displays the gorgeous hues of a west Florida sunset—oranges, crimsons, flaming magentas and velvety violets. And the water reflects the fleeting sun. This design addresses perspective with emphasis on stitch choice, thread texture, and the sheen of the fibers and will also address subtle shading techniques.

  • Pick threads and embellishments
  • Pick appropriate stitches

We’ll use teacher provided samples as well as samples brought by the students. Students should bring possible canvases and their favorite stitch books. Patriotic Treetop Star in Five Easy Pieces
Michele Roberts
12318 Thursday, August 23, 2018

How about a jeweled red white and blue star for a display of patriotic ornaments? A perfectly shaped five-pointed star is an engineering project: nothing is at a standard angle - everything is 72 degrees or 36 degrees (and that is not the way needlepoint stitches work without extensive stitch compensation). There is an easy way: avoid compensation and stitch together five separate pieces, similar to quilting. The entire assembly is stitched with metallic ribbons and a special oblique slanted satin stitch. Star-shaped aurora borealis crystals are added.

Proficiency Level: All
Design Size: 8” x 8” x ½”

Kit Costs/Contents: $92; five pieces of #18 white interlock canvas, Kreinik and YLI metallic ribbons, couching thread, beading thread, nylon filament, Swarovski star-shaped crystals, needles, bound booklet, plus practice canvas and practice threads

  Designing with Golden Sections (Encore)
Catherine Jordan
12712 Monday, August 27, 2018

Take design to the next level with a working knowledge and application of golden sections! We will begin with the basics and use progressive exercises to understand the construction of proportions based upon the golden section: golden section rectangles, root rectangles, and golden spirals. Dynamic lines and focal areas derived from these proportions can open new areas for needlework design. Students will leave class with working templates that can be used for future design work and understand how the design process can be facilitated by applying classic proportioning systems.

Proficiency Level: All
Design Size: N/A

Kit Costs/Contents: $45; compass, ruler, plastic templates, graph paper, pencil, Sharpie marker, instructions, and pictures

  Cornered
Debbie Rowley
12719 Monday, August 27, 2018

Corners present a challenge in compensation – how do you turn inside and outside corners for a cohesive look? Cornered takes on this dilemma and presents 15 different borders, each making two turns in the piece, with an additional filling stitch pattern. Red, white, blue and gold pearl cottons with a hint of metallic floss eliminates the need for laying stitches so the project can move faster. Some of the borders are single stitches, some are composites, but all are interesting!

Proficiency Level: Intermediate
Design Size: 8” x 10”

Kit Costs/Contents: $120; #18 white canvas, Presencia Pearl Cottons #5, #8, #12, #16, and Metallic Floss, instruction book
