Examine the coronation robes and trains of kings and queens - they are encrusted with raised gold embroidery hand-sewn of metal - gold. For needlepoint, this type of embroidery is the most luxurious form of embellishment and may be combined with traditional evenweave stitches.
This is a techniques course intended to provide students with an understanding of traditional English raised gold work. English Goldwork Heart I, first in a series of hearts, is a good introduction to traditional English raised gold work. Students gain an understanding of the basic techniques of dimensional metal embroidery, padding materials and techniques, basic purls (bullion) and how to handle these traditional materials.
English Goldwork Heart I uses gold from an English goldsmith house, padding, and a needlepoint background. Gold purl work has a vocabulary all its own, as well as special techniques. Stitches and techniques used include St. George and St. Andrew, padding, couching, invisible couching, chipping, parallel laying, plunging, twisting (both "S"-ing and "Z"-ing), seeding, over-stretching and wrapping. The instruction booklet contains detailed diagrams for each unique technique and stitch, including a complete supply list, complete stitching instructions and a color photograph.
