Second in the series, English Goldwork Heart II has been taught at two ANG national seminars, and now it is available as a correspondence course. For students who stitched Heart I, Heart II is just a wee bit more difficult, though Heart I is not a pre-requisite for successful stitching on Heart II.
This shaped, raised heart is covered in several types of gold from an English goldsmith house, and is surrounded by a delicate blackwork filigree, executed in English gold thread. This course covers the following techniques: padding, invisible couching, standard couching, laying, "S"-ing and chipping, laying gold in a leaf pattern, attaching spangles, and blackwork. Four parallel lines of pearl purl are couched invisibly, resting on layers of felt padding. The pearl purl is bent, twisted, folded, curved, hidden, plunged and terminates in spangles. The effect is that of a brooch on brocade. This is a techniques course intended to provide students with practice in traditional English raised goldwork. All gold is directly imported from Great Britain. Students gain an understanding of the basic techniques of dimensional metal embroidery, padding materials and techniques, basic purls (bullion) and how to handle these traditional materials.
