English Goldwork Heart III

Third in the series, English Goldwork Heart III is a traditional raised design, embellished with several types of English gold purls, that has its heart carved away as in a French Creve Coeur. The background is French silk cord and gold thread. The types of gilt gold metal used include pearl purl, bright check purl, wire check purl, and gold cord. This course employs English techniques such as padding, invisible couching, laying, twisting, chipping, curved beading, and a Gothic fan-vaulting variation. This is a techniques course intended to provide students with practice in traditional English raised goldwork. The gold is directly imported from Great Britain. Students will gain an understanding of the basic techniques of dimensional metal embroidery, padding materials and techniques, basic purls (bullion), and how to handle these traditional materials. Particular attention is paid to learning how to turn sharp interior corners with the rigid gold.
