Flight of Fancy is a mixed media incorporating a pleasing variety of threads and techniques — laidwork, patterned couching, and pulled work combined with canvas and surface embroidery stitches. The butterflies’ wings are worked with metallic braided ribbon, gold cord, and stranded cottons. The wing tips are worked in variations of cashmere and Smyrna cross stitches, and a raised chain band gives the bodies additional textural interest. Double straight cross, tent, flat, rice, and double running stitches are also included. The lacy portions of the design are executed in single fagot and drawn fagot fillings. Worked on 23-count Congress cloth, the finished piece will fit a small Sudberry House tray (not included) or can be framed. The finished piece is approximately 8˝ square. |
