Orna Willis’ Grecian Glory Cuff

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This workshop will be a wonderful foray into the beauty of needlepoint as wearable art. Drawing inspiration from ancient tiles, the Grecian Glory Cuff with its Greek Key patterns, tessellated shapes and tiny pebble surfaces, has a feel of modernity and history at once. Deep, rich colored threads and elegant embellishments; this cuff will be a showstopper whenever you wear it. The cuff is stitched on #18 canvas using a combination of sumptuous fibers; hand-dyed silk variegated threads, silk perle threads, and an overdyed Australian wool fiber. The kit will include the fibers, the Ultrasuede to back the cuff and the coordinating pearls, gems or beads. The variations of the weight and texture of the fibers and the dazzle of the embellishments bring interest to the cuff.

This workshop will guide you through multiple skills; stitching a geometric charted design on the diagonal, the use of interesting combinations of colors and textures, finishing the stitched design into a cuff in a simple and effective manner and embellishing your cuff with beautiful jewels.

The design is offered in three colorways:

New Rose; which include pinks, oranges, salmons, blues and greens

Pine Forest, with greens, reds and dashes of periwinkle and gold

Smoky Woods, with browns and aubergines, purples and golds.

The completed stitched piece is approximately 2.5”x8” and the canvas size is 8”x10”. The design is a continuous pattern and can be altered to accommodate different wrist sizes; instructions will include a key for size changes.

Your instructions will be detailed with color illustrations, close-up photographs and charts as well as a laminated master chart that will survive any rough stitching conditions.

The following material options will be available:

  • Instruction book only
  • Instruction book and kit which includes the canvas, threads and finishing materials

Schedule for Posting of Lessons:
To give students time to work each portion before the next lesson is released, lessons will be posted on November 5th, December 3rd, January 7th, February 9th, February 25th. The Cyber chat list will be available until the end of the month.

You must specify on the registration page if you want just the instructions or if you also want the optional kit.

For details on threads and other supplies, see the Materials List Page.

The "classroom" for the ANG CyberWorkshop will be a dedicated e-mail list where the teacher will post the lessons (text only) and students can post questions and comments about the class. In addition, the teacher may post visual aids (stitched samples, expanded charts, etc.). The e-mail list will be created after registration closes. Based on past experience, the amount of traffic on this e-mail list varies throughout the class. At the beginning of the class, students can expect to receive more than a dozen messages on some days. As the class continues, there are usually significantly fewer messages. The class fee includes access to the dedicated e-mail list. Because the class lessons will be posted to this e-mail list, students participating in an ANG CyberWorkshop must have a unique e-mail address.

Please note: a minimum level of computer knowledge is required. You should know how to use your e-mail program and how to access a password-protected Web site. ANG is not responsible for teaching these skills.

You will be getting e-mail from the teacher, the angel, and other students in the class. You may not recognize the e-mail addresses from which the messages have been sent, but all will have a subject line that clearly identifies the message as being part of the CyberWorkshop. DO NOT put blocks on any of these addresses. If you do not wish to receive the CyberWorkshop messages at your regular address, please set up a separate account at one of the free Web-based e-mail services, and make sure that the Class Angel has that address.

Registration ends on August 31, 2014. The first lesson will be posted November 5, 2014. This will be a four-month workshop. There will not be a critique at the end of the workshop.
