Join us for this four-month class stitching Gathered In! One look at this wonderful design by Sandy Rodgers and you can almost feel the warmth of an Indian summer October afternoon. First you’ll notice three ears of colored corn with acorns nestled in among them. Then you’ll see how all these are held together with a golden yellow ribbon bow which moves, twists, and turns. This splendid tribute to the glory of autumn color is completed with couched bullion and twisted cord. Join us as we stitch a special design which has so much learning potential. The spectacular ears of colored corn in this fantastic design are fashioned with, you guessed it, beads! The tricks are to place those bits of colored beads just right so that they really do look like corn, and how to attach the beads in a way that it doesn’t take forever and a day. Sandy’s topnotch instructions, along with the detail photos, will show you just how to do both. It’s really fun! The acorns, tucked just above the ears of corn, are formed with a traditional canvaswork stitch and directional shading. Placement of a metallic gives them special sparkle. The ribbons, those glorious ribbons, are created with values of golden yellow stranded threads worked in realistic, textural, and directional shading techniques. We’ll discuss various methods to cause the ribbon appear to turn and move, how to form highlights and areas of depth. As you stitch Gathered In, you can use either stranded silk or cotton. Suggested color numbers are given in the text for both Silk Mori and DMC floss to help you select threads. Although we’ll be doing a curving, spiraling ribbon as we learn just how easy Sandy’s approach to realistic shading can be, the principles learned while stitching it can be easily transferred to other objects in your future stitching. Surrounding the colored corn bouquet is an oval band composed of two gold threads. Pearl purl and twisted cord are each couched in traditional technique to maintain their sparkling color. We’ll learn how to handle pearl purl so that this very special ‘thread’ is displayed to best advantage and how to create an invisible joining with it. Plus, we’ll learn Sandy’s special method to effectively form a continuous line with the twisted cord. Gathered In is a spectacular tribute to the autumn harvest season. It is also an exciting opportunity for intermediate level students to learn how really easy it is to do effective shading. Can you do it? Can you really stitch this glorious design? Well, maybe not now. But, follow Sandy’s famous explicit and crystal clear directions, read her Internet posted lessons, join us for this super CyberWorkshop, and you’ll be amazed at what you and your needle can accomplish! Plus, you’ll have a whole lot of fun while you do it! Lessons for Gathered In will be posted over a four-month period. |
