Dorothy Lesher's The Dragonmaster

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The Dragon meets his Master in the Wizard. Angry and resistant, the Dragon vents his rage at the Wizard’s all powerful magic.

The Dragon’s body shimmers in black silk on black Congress cloth with accents of red silk and fine gold metallic in the wing. Depending on the angle of viewing and light source, because the body of the Dragon is stitched black on black, it will appear or partially disappear, leaving only a glimmer of the fine gold to be seen. This lends to the mystery and intrigue of the design. The wing is worked in a variety of patches, using creative stitches and couched patterns, all in the recessive color of black with a splash of red and gold.

The Wizard’s robe of ‘quilted’ gold silk is faced with velvet and trimmed with multiple rows of couched gold cording on the cuffs. His long scarf is adorned with a geometric pattern worked in red silk and fine gold, which incorporates the black of the canvas into the design. An undergown in a fine gold networked pattern filled with rich purple silk, showing touches of red completes the robe.

The design is worked on black Congress cloth to enhance the dramatic look of the figures. The fine black cord used in the body of the Dragon is actually 1 ply of a 6-ply cord that is used in the spine of the Dragon. Each student will learn, with explicit instructions, to successfully separate the ply to be used as a single strand for the body stitching.

This is an advanced-level class. The design area is 15" X 13" worked on a piece of Congress cloth which is 18" X 16". The threads used include silks, metallics and wool.

The required materials kit will include:

  • Instructions
  • Congress cloth
  • Threads

Please join Dorothy to stitch your own Dragonmaster.

Schedule for Posting of Lessons:

To give students time to work each portion before the next lesson is released, lessons will be posted on June 1st, June 15th, July 1st, July 15th, August 1st, August 15th, September 1st, September 15th.

The Cyber chat list will be available until the end of the month.

If you have previously taken The Dragonmaster with Dorothy and would like to participate in this class, you can audit the class. Students who audit the class will not receive an instruction booklet, canvas or threads but will be able to participate in the Cyber chat list associated with the workshop. See the registration process information below.

You must specify on the registration page if you want the complete course and required kit or if you are auditing the workshop.

For details on threads and other supplies, see the Materials List Page.

The "classroom" for the ANG CyberWorkshop will be a dedicated e-mail list where the teacher will post the lessons (text only) and students can post questions and comments about the class. In addition, the teacher may post visual aids (stitched samples, expanded charts, etc.). The e-mail list will be created after registration closes. Based on past experience, the amount of traffic on this e-mail list varies throughout the class. At the beginning of the class, students can expect to receive more than a dozen messages on some days. As the class continues, there are usually significantly fewer messages. The class fee includes access to the dedicated e-mail list. Because the class lessons will be posted to this e-mail list, students participating in an ANG CyberWorkshop must have a unique e-mail address.

Please note: a minimum level of computer knowledge is required. You should know how to use your e-mail program and how to access a password-protected Web site. ANG is not responsible for teaching these skills.

You will be getting email from the teacher, the angel, and other students in the class. You may not recognize the email addresses from which the messages have been sent, but all will have a subject line that clearly identifies the message as being part of the CyberWorkshop. DO NOT put blocks on any of these addresses. If you do not wish to receive the CyberWorkshop messages at your regular address, please set up a separate account at one of the free Web-based e-mail services, and make sure that the Class Angel has that address.

Registration ends on March 31, 2014. The first lesson will be posted on June 1, 2014. This will be a four-month workshop. There will not be a critique at the end of the workshop.
