Questions About ANG-list

The Answers

What is the purpose of this list?

ANG-list is an e-mail list for the discussion of all aspects of needlepoint. An e-mail list is a group of people interested in the same thing -- needlepoint, in our case. When you join the list, you will start receiving email messages from other people on the list. The members of the list determine what gets discussed. If it relates to needlepoint, this is the place to discuss it. Questions about the list should be directed to postmaster@needlepoint.org.

Why do we have to have rules?

There are currently over 500 people subscribed to ANG-list, and the rules are designed to make the list meet the needs of the majority. If each person posted only one inappropriate thing per year - this would result in everyone spending time reading more than 2 off-topic messages per day. People subscribe to ANG-list to learn about needlepoint. We owe it to them to keep the discussions on that topic.

Furthermore, ANG is a non-profit organization. If we appear to be endorsing commercial products, we could lose that status. Therefore, we must enforce a strict no-advertising policy. Questions about the list should be directed to postmaster@needlepoint.org.

What is this lemon cake recipe?

This was posted to the list early on by a well-meaning member. Every once in a while someone asks for it, and stirs up a controversy about off-topic posts. The recipe itself is available.

What is the digest?

Back on the web page where you subscribed, you could choose either to get list messages as individual emails or to have them saved up for a once-a-day digest.

If you want to change from individual message to digest format (or vice versa), or if you need to unsubscribe for a few days (like if you go on vacation and don't want a zillion messages when you get back), use the this form.

Is there a way to retrieve old messages?

The archives are kept at DataRealm, ANG's Web Presence Provider. To access them, send the following message to majordomo@mail.serve.com:

index ang-list-digest

You'll get back a long list with lines like the following:

-rw-rw---- 1 majordom 54 19531 Dec 12 23:55 v01.n001
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom 54 3609 Dec 13 23:56 v01.n002
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom 54 6557 Oct 16 1997 v01.n003

(There was a blip in the numbering of the digests in December, 1997 which accounts for the weird date/numbers at the beginning of the list.)

To retrieve any of the files, send another message to majordomo@mail.serve.com. Include a line like the following for each file that you want to see:

get ang-list-digest v01.n001

Make sure you send the mail to majordomo, not to the list.
