Directions
- Pattern A is outlined in Steps 2-3.
- Pattern B is outlined in Step 4.
- Pattern C is outlined in Step 6.
- Pattern D is outlined in Step 8.
Step 1 Figure 1 below shows you where each pattern is stitched on the mitten.
- If your computer is a PC, click here to print a pattern to trace.
- If your computer is a Mac, click here to print a pattern to trace.
The pattern should print out approximately 4" wide by 4.75" high. If not, please adjust the scale of your printer software and print again.
After you've printed the pattern, carefully trace the outline of the mitten onto the canvas using a very light touch with the marker. Then trace all the lines, diamonds, squares and triangles inside the mitten design onto the canvas.

Step 2 Cut an 18" length of green thread. Thread the needle with one of the cut ends of the thread and pull the thread through the needles eye so that there is about one inch of the thread on one side of the needles eye. Tie a knot in the longer side of the thread. Begin with a waste knot placed at the far right side of your canvas in the row you will be stitching over. Refer to Figure 2 as a guide -- the thick black line represents the outline of the mitten that you traced onto your canvas in Step 1.

Figure 2
Step 3 Using Figure 3 as a guide, begin stitching the Cross Stitch. Bring your needle up at point 1 and down at point 2, up at point 3, down at point 4, covering the lines drawn with the marker as you go. Complete as many Cross stitches as you can along this row. At the end of the row end your thread. Begin the second row with the gold thread in the same way you did the first row. The third row is completed with the red thread in the same way as the previous two rows. While each row does not need to begin in the same column, all the Cross Stitches need to line up vertically.

Figure 3
Step 4 Now thread the needle with an 18" piece of red thread. Begin with a waste knot placed at the far right side of your canvas in the row you will be stitching over. Using Figure 4 as a guide, begin stitching the Upright Diamond Stitch. Bring your needle up at point 1 and down at point 2, up at point 3, down at point 4, covering the lines drawn with the marker as you go. Complete as many Upright Diamond stitches as marked on the canvas. At the end of the row end your thread.

Step 5 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the second area of Pattern A.
Step 6 Now thread the needle with an
18" piece of gold thread. Begin with a waste knot placed at the far
right side of your canvas in the row you will be stitching over.
Using Figure 5 as a guide, begin stitching the Smyrna Cross
Stitch. Bring your needle up at point 1 and down at point 2, up
at point 3, down at point 4, covering the lines drawn with the
marker as you go. Complete as many Smyrna Cross stitches as
marked on the canvas. At the end of the row end your thread.

Step 7 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the third area of Pattern A.
Step 8 Now thread the needle with an 18" piece of green thread. Begin with a waste knot placed at the far right side of your canvas in the row you will be stitching over. Using Figure 6 as a guide, begin stitching the Triangle Stitch. Bring your needle up at point 1 and down at point 2, up at point 3, down at point 4, covering the lines drawn with the marker as you go. Complete as many Triangle stitches as marked on the canvas. At the end of the row end your thread. Repeat the same process above with the brown thread to stitch the Tree Trunks. Please note that there are no lines drawn on the canvas for the tree trunks.

Figure 5 Pattern D
Begin Pattern A
Step 9 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the fourth area of Pattern A.
Step 10 Glue a piece of brown paper bag or tan felt to the back of the canvas. Be sure to place glue around the outline of the mitten. Let dry completely. When dry, cut out the mitten along the outline, making sure not to cut through any of the stitches.
Step 11 Take an 18 length of each of the colors red, green and gold, and gather them together. Tie a knot in one end, leaving about 2 inches of thread as a fringe. Braid the threads together. Tie a knot near the end of the threads you have just braided, again leaving about 2 inches of fringe. Glue the braid along the edge of the mitten to cover the cut area. Be sure to leave enough braid to form a hanging loop, and have some braid dangling down, as seen in the photo at the top of the page. Now hang your ornament for display.
