The Milanese Stitch is an excellent choice for a background stitch. The effect you achieve with this stitch varies greatly with your thread choice.

The Milanese Stitch is stitched diagonally, with each diagonal row stitched in the opposite direction.

A variation on this stitch can be accomplished to produce an open space in the middle in which to place another specialty stitch, a stitch that occupies a square area, like a small Rhodes stitch.
