Stitch of the Month
July 2003: Couching Variation

by David McCaskill

This month's stitch is a couching variation. On 18-ct. mono, I used pearl cotton #5 for the white and blue and a #8 metallic braid for the red. (Happy 4th of July!)  Because the stitch can be worked vertically or horizontally, it's versatile and can be useful in many situations. I've used it vertically (as diagrammed) with a combination of overdyed and solid threads for tree trunks, harbor pilings, porch railings and fences.  If the stitch is worked horizontally in pale blues, it works well for sky.  When worked in shades of greens it adapts well for mountains, rolling hills and grassy areas.
