Stitch of the Month
October 2003: Clematis Square

by David McCaskill

The first time I used this stitch I was attempting to create a clematis vine as a border around a floral design. The flowers were stitched individually, randomly placed around the outside edge, and then a leaf pattern was filled in. The flowers can also be connected, as I did in the stitched model, and used over an entire background, and an enlarged version of a Smyrna cross can be used to fill in. This is also effective worked entirely in one color over a dress or coat on a painted canvas, especially using a thin thread like a Pearl #12 and allowing the shading to shadow through.
