| Description: | Jean asked Iris to be a member of the pilot class she
was holding with her usual crew of stitchers. Iris had
stitched Jean's original Puzzle piece the previous year
and was awarded People's Choice at the Greater Kansas
City Needlework Guild's Summer Camp for Stitchers that
year (and went on to win first in the the professional
charted design category at ANG's Memphis seminar in
1996). This was a hard-working, but enjoyable and rewarding class in the summer of 1996 in Peoria. First of all, it was a great group. Jean had a "plat" of the purse and numerous charted stitches. The students were to stitch in monochrome, preferably from their stashes and each of them was to have a different color. Since Iris never seems to stitch much brown, she had plenty of that color. In addition, the month before when she had taught the first "Puzzle" to a group in Casper, Iris had developed a sampler for them to do first, reviewing all the marvelous patterns Jean commonly uses in her designs so was very up-to-date on all their possibilities to enhance a design. The students had a great time stitching for long periods of time, eating, helping one another with constructive critiques, eating, comparing work and ideas, eating, then having a meal! The only boring part about it was when the body of the purse was finished and Iris had to stitch a strap for it. Jean's niece, Jan, finished the piece into a purse. In addition, Iris has adapted the "Puzzle" concept to a Western hat band for her new matching Stetson-style hat and hopes to have it finished to wear at some future seminar. And she has about a fourth of a large pillow done. Goodness knows where this will lead! |
