Daughter of the Sun

Description: Meredith found the print of Burt Seabourn's "Daughter of the Sun" in a gift shop at the Grand Canyon. She stole Meredith's heart and she knew she had to do her in needlepoint. It was a labor of love.

Starting by tracing the print on tissue paper, making an outline of the important features, Meredith then retraced it onto her linen.

Using DMC floss Meredith began with the eyes because as they came alive and took on character they urged her to go on with the project. It made it more fun. From there she finished the face blending the six strands of floss as she went along. She sat with the original print beside her so her colors could be true to the artist's. The most difficult area was the hair with its many highlights of purple, lavender, green, brown, whites, and grays. The effect was very subtle. Everything except the bird's wing feather was done in tent stitch. She accented the wings with long stitches.

Meredith sent a photo of her to Mr. Seabourn asking his permission to enter his "Daughter of the Sun" in needlepoint shows. She was delighted with his response and some time later was able to show him the piece in person. That was when she learned that the little girl in the painting was his daughter. Now, as a adult, she is an artist herself.

What a joy!
