Baroque
| Stitcher: | Ro Pace |
| Designer: | Jean Hilton |
| Location: | After being displayed at her local stitching shop, Baroque is now hanging in the stitcher's home. |
| Description: | One of the reasons that Ro stitched this piece is
because she loves the creative challenge that a Hilton
piece gives her. Once you understand the structure of
each individual stitch, the doors of possibility open.
Choice of thread and color then become vehicles of
expression. With "Baroque," Ro's goal was to transform her memories of winters in Cleveland, Ohio into a visual art form. Memories of walking out of church after Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve to find a fairy wonderland of new fallen snow. Or, looking out of a window when you've been up with a sick child to see the moon glistening on the crest of an icy snow bank. These memories dictated the colors of moonlight silver, hidden gray, icy aqua green, and a touch of shadowy mauve. The Fleur-de-Lis Crescents surrounding the central medallion were the most challenging. In order to get that "moonlight, icy snow bank" effect, Ro finally had to use two different colors and threads and lay them as one. This took patience, more patience, and then some more patience. Threads had to be laid perfectly on both front and back. Counting became a way of life. And, Ro learned how to work with two needles and two types of thread simultaneously, still doing them both justice. After stitching the piece, framing became very important. It needed to support the wintry night feeling and give it definition. Ro was fortunate enough to find a framer who achieved the right effect. |
