| Description: |
Neva chose this class at the Greater Kansas City Needlepoint Guild's regional summer seminar (in 1996) because it offered techniques that were new to her. Also, she liked the design and wanted to do a class with Mary Ellen. Each small diamond in the piece uses different wrapping techniques: wrapped stem stitch, wrapped and couched fish line, wrapped stretched cords, wrapped couched cord. Other techniques included application of gold leaf and gold kid, wrapping plastic sleeves and attaching beads and a jewel. Students had the option of stitching the four square diamonds in a vertical or horizontal row, in pairs, individually or, as in Neva's piece, in a large diamond. There were also choices in the arrangement and shading of elements within each small diamond and in the shading of the burden stitch inner border. After Neva had her piece stitched with one ribbon stitch variation outer border, Mary Ellen suggested adding a second outer border. She used the same stitch, a slightly darker value of silk and left an open row between the outer borders, breaking the pattern at the corner to fit the space. |
