When I began this piece, I knew nothing about blackwork.  Chottie discussed blackwork very briefly at the beginning of the first program and then went on to relate the design history of each particular band.  She had done much research in museums overseas and was also fortunate to have viewed several private collections.  As a result, Chottie has accumulated an extensive amount of information on blackwork over the years.  Her stories about each band and her travels in England were most interesting.

Since I didn't have any real training in blackwork, a dear friend of mine, Nina Goerres, was kind enough to invite me to her home several times, where she taught me the basics on stitching blackwork.  We spent many an afternoon together stitching our samplers and becoming good friends.
