Bargello Fish

Stitcher:

Peter Crawford

Designer:

DeDe Ogden, who also wrote the stitch guide. The class was taught by Barbara Gleszer. When I last talked with DeDe she said she had retired this design.

Location:

The fish is currently at my shop, The Red Thread, in Santa Barbara, California.

Description:

I saw the fish framed and as a tote bag at Weaver’s Needle & Frame. I was riveted by the colors of the design and the application of sequins to needlepoint. The stitches I chose for the fins and the background are original.

After the first night of the class I received a phone call from my best friend, Melissa, at 4:30 a.m. Her stepfather had committed suicide. After many tearful conversations, I decided to rejoin the fish class on the third night. For some reason, I was obsessed with that fish; it was the only thing that seemed to comfort me. I finished it within a week. I had it framed two times and was unhappy with both concepts. While looking through a frame catalog, I saw rounded Plexiglas frames for dried flowers. I thought the frames would look great as a porthole on a boat or at an aquarium. My fish popped into my mind and the rest is history.
