The
inspiration for this piece was a photograph I took while on vacation in
California in June 2000. We drove down the coast from San Francisco to
Carmel and stopped at an old lighthouse along the way. A bank of
yellow flowers was adjacent to the lighthouse, and I thought they were so
cheerful that I had to snap a photo of them.
I stitched this piece as part of a workshop offered by the Carolinas Chapter of ANG. Ilse Altherr taught the class, and each student brought his or her own source photograph or picture. I took the class because I want to improve my ability to “stitch reality.” I am fascinated with landscapes and perspective, and this piece gave me a chance to explore the use of color and stitches to achieve a realistic representation of the original landscape. I think the most interesting thing about this project is the principle of limitation. The only stitches I used were straight stitches and Chinese knots. The only thread I used was cotton floss. I stitched the piece on light gray Congress cloth. You can’t get much simpler than that, but when these simple tools are combined with a basic knowledge of color and perspective the results are exciting. That’s what gives needlepoint its endless variety and fun! |
