Silken Wings

Stitcher:

Carol Whitton

Designer:

Paula Minkebige of Crossed Wing Collection

Location:

My chickadee porcelain jar with my ribbons and the Princess Grace Rose are in my china cabinet as part of my treasures. They will always be there.

Description:

I stitched my chickadee because I wanted to try something completely different for a change. I stitched on 40-count silk gauze using short lengths of silk floss. In addition I had to be careful to keep the various shades of the gray feathers in their proper places besides laying the threads to look like feathers. I like this little bird so much I had to learn new stitching methods and at the same time maintain my high standard of stitching for beauty and enjoyment. Needless to say it was a real challenge with a wonderful conclusion.

We moved to a rural area that does not have shops or a local chapter closer than three hours away. My new friends think all my stitching is wonderful but they flatter me. I enter pieces in the exhibit for expert opinions and for the numerical critique. I use my critique as a real gauge to keep stitching or find a new “art.”

Stitching is great mental therapy when one has serious health problems. The rewards can be great in more ways than one. I know.
