Description:

Architectural structure has always been my stitching interest since I picked up needlepoint as a hobby back in 1998. I love to work on Peter Ashe canvases of buildings. The detailed line drawings of the houses in his canvases not only provided interest to the eye, they also presented challenges to stitch.

The smaller designs by Peter Ashe are usually buildings with minimum landscape. In “Sylvan Lodge”, however, the lush green lawn, profusely blooming flowers and the stately trees towering over the rooftop of the house really provided balance in the overall design. I went home and couldn’t stop talking about this canvas. My sweet husband, knowing Peter Ashe was my favorite needlepoint designer, bought the canvas as a surprise birthday present for me.

Since the light source seemed to come from the upper left-hand corner of the house, detail in the shadow effect on the rooftop was especially important in order to keep the three-dimensional effect of the drawing. This piece also provided me with the opportunity to learn ribbon work. With the guidance of my talented teacher, Susan Portra, I learned that mixing silk ribbons with a variety of threads and beads can create fantastic results.
