Description:

I wanted to create something without the use of a pattern prepared by someone else. Deanna Funk taught a design class at EGA National Seminar. We were given a choice of colors and instructions to crochet or knit something until we had a nucleus with which to work. Then we were to attach it to 18-count mono canvas in such a way that it did not look like it was just "plopped" on the canvas. I found this to be an exciting process, one I had not tried before. However, I became stuck midway. I placed the piece on my mantel for several weeks hoping for an inspiration. None came. I put it away for several months not knowing what to do to complete it. My stitching group had a retreat, and I took it with me, hoping to work on it. By this time, it had become affectionally known as "My Blob." I asked around all the tables at the retreat, "What is this? Which side is the top? What can I do to make this a pleasing design?" After much talk and laughter, one participant said, "I have no idea what you should do, but a teacher once told me if you are having a seemingly unsolvable problem with a design, make several photo copies of it. Make copies in various shades of darkness." This was my answer. I made a dozen copies. I worked with a pencil on these copies until I had a pleasing design. Choosing threads to finish the design was relatively easy. It was then that "My Blob" became "The City Park."
