Description:

The inspiration for this piece came from many sources. One is my love of old buildings and old flowers. Another would be the many wonderful threads and ribbons on the market. And yet the most important inspiration is my memories of warm summer days and the hollyhock dolls created with my grandmother. Hollyhocks are so often the subject of designs, but they always seems to be featured against a light-colored background. I wanted mine against a once red, now weather-beaten outbuilding.

I chose the long-arm or long-legged stitch for the building because I though it most closely resembled worn, weathered wood. I mixed two colors of variegated thread to achieve the look I wanted. The one concession to the old building is the newly painted window and door trim. I created some relief by stitching the roof as a separate piece and then joining it to the background. With the relief of the roof, the hollyhocks don't appear to be mere add-ons. Since my patterns are always for sale, I have to work within certain parameters. They can't be so complicated as to make them unchartable or overwhelming in detailed illustrations. However, I always want to try new things.
I designed and stitched "Garden Shed" as a part of my business. After receiving an Honorable Mention last year for "Main Street" (the first time I entered an exhibit), I realized that people aren't put off with detail or stitching something a little more time-consuming. Now, I look forward to each year's creations with great enthusiasm. Just as I tried to outshine "Main Street" this year, I will have to come up with a better design and be more creative than this year's "Garden Shed."
