Location:

It is hanging in my home.

Description:

I have used the central star to make over 50 Christmas ornaments and three-sided hanging ornaments.
My husband suggested that I should use my star on a larger piece that we could hang on the wall throughout the year, not just a seasonal Christmas piece.
I modified the center star from an Amadeus stitch done in two colors on another piece. I enlarged and created the star stitch and used three colors and/or threads to create the design. It is a good stitch to use in making a Christmas ornament and a way to learn about new threads. There is also an interesting color study when colors in the three layers are changed. In this piece, I topped two colors of pink silk with silver metallic and bead work. I constructed the outer border of eight waffle stitches per side in a different way that I call the "rotating thread waffle."  It is a "what would happen if I did this?" experiment. I stitched each of the four layers of crosses in each waffle stitch with a different color and type of thread, and then rotated the color layering differently from the adjacent waffle stitches. I was pleased with the result as it gives an interesting effect to the edge, but it does not distract from the center motif.
