Santa Climbing Down the Chimney

Stitcher:

Nancy Smiegowski

Designer:

Rebecca Wood

Location:

It hangs on my bedroom wall (along with my gallery of other needlepoint pieces), next to the beautiful ribbon it won in Albuquerque. My husband suggested the gallery, so every morning and every evening I can look at everything I've done and ooh and aah over them all.

Description:

It simply appealed to me. I saw all kinds of possibilities for textures and fancy stitches. As an aside, I only do small pieces for two reasons: a) I can actually finish several in a year and thereby have some accomplishment, and b) I require a cat in my lap to do needlepoint. The cats won't stay in my lap if I'm working on a frame, so it must be small enough for me to hold without hurting my hand. No cats = no needlepoint. And, occasional cat spit doesn't hurt anything except Neon Rays.
It took me forever to get Santa's beard to look right. I ripped it out so much the canvas started to get soft on me. I love the final look though, of a cashmere and reverse cashmere stitch to make it look like he has curls. Everything else I tried though either stood up too high or was too flat. Don't be afraid to experiment! Sometimes it just takes a while to pull together the look you want.
