Shaded Kimonos

Stitcher:

Victoria Nessel

Designer:

Betty Chen Louis

Location:

It is hanging in my home.

Description:

This was a one-day class at Callaway Gardens, and Betty happens to be one of my favorite teachers. I am also particularly fond of color manipulation, a technique she teaches so well. She also doesn't seem to mind when I tweak her designs (such as a slight color variation) to make them uniquely mine.
This piece is a prime example of how my needlepoint has changed since I stitched my first piece in 1972. Back then, I stitched in wool and completely covered the canvas. Now, the canvas is an integral part of the design, and we have such a wealth of threads to choose from! Walking into a needlework shop, with every color imaginable hanging on the walls, still takes my breath away after more than 30 years of stitching.

The play of the different colors and textures in this piece adds such depth and life to this piece. This piece is what twenty-first century needlepoint is all about.
