I looked for a design to stitch that had a Southwestern flair to enter into this year's exhibit to complement the location of the seminar. I found an artist in Santa Fe, Poteet Victory, who captured exactly what I wanted. It had the Southwestern flair, but it was different from anything I had seen before. I wanted to try my hand at creative needlepoint as discussed by Penny Cornell in her book, The Liberated Canvas. With Poteet Victory's painting, "Songs of the People," I had the opportunity to try different creative techniques because of the use of spot color combined with a free flow of color in much of the design. Though I found the objects in the design very concrete, the use of color and texture was what freed me to try my hand at this approach to stitching, which is new for me. |
| I worked on this piece the summer before seminar. Since this was a new approach to canvas work for me, I really was not certain that the technique was truly working for me. However, when I was finished, I made a concerted effort to find a really good framer. When I thought I found one, I sent the piece off to be framed, asking that the framer use his expertise in choosing the frame, as he was halfway across the country, and I had to rely on him entirely for frame choice. When I got the picture back, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The framing pulled it all together and truly made the entire piece look stunning. |
