After taking a design pilot
class by Dakota Rogers called "The Wright Style," I designed this piece.
During the class we discussed Frank Lloyd Wright's style of art and drawing.
Each student designed a piece independently. We worked on our sketches and
started stitching in the class. Dakota stated that this piece would be an
original piece. However, the class was the inspiration for the piece as we
discussed Frank Lloyd Wright's ideas from nature. I looked outside and saw a
butterfly. I had a butterfly pin on my shirt and a small butterfly sculpture
in my home. These all contributed to my inspiration.
As I decided on threads and stitches I wanted to show a graduation of color
within the piece. I decided to use thread blending in my needle using three
colors of floss to create a gradual change of color from yellow to peach on
the top wing and in the greens on the bottom wing. The overdyed silk used on
the top wing was subtly shifted so the colors would change gradually and not
just be stripes of color. The use of geometric shapes was inspired by the
Frank Lloyd Wright designs we studied, but not by any specific one. The
background is all diagonal mosaic, but changes direction to emphasize the
butterfly's design and bring in the geometric feel again. Lastly, the gold
metallic braid is couched on top of the piece to smooth the diagonal lines
and make the butterfly shimmer.
I wasn't sure whether this piece should be in the original, adaptation or
class-project category. Dakota Rogers felt it was an original piece of
needlework. |
