I took the Merry Cox workbox class through our local Sampler group, Orange Coast Sampler Guild from the Fullerton/Orange area of California in 1998. At the time, I didn’t realize how much stitching was involved with putting the design on both the inside and the outside of each of the four sides of the box. Since I had started stitching it that way, I was determined to continue putting the vine in both the inside and outside of the box. This, of course, took much longer than I anticipated. Five years after starting "Stitch Li'l Darling" I finally finished! Since I had not given up on the project, I was looking for a saying to stitch on the box that would commemorate my perseverance. I looked in all the quote books that I could find, but my husband didn’t think that any of the quotes were quite right. In June, 2003 he and I went to Tempe, Arizona to the Pacific Southwestern Region EGA’s seminar and the first night we were there, we went out to dinner to a Chinese restaurant. At the end of the meal, I opened my fortune cookie and read out loud, “Allow yourself time — you will reach success.” He said, “That’s your quote!” After seminar, I went home, charted the saying out, stitched it in and finished the box within the week (including all finishing work)! I saw Pat Correz the very next week at Sampler Guild and she said she wanted to take the box with her for the National Exhibit. I loved this project and am so happy that my friends and family were all involved with the process. |
