"Winter Sunset" was inspired by a watercolor I created in January, 2003. To interpret the scene using needlework applications, I painted several fabrics with transfer paint, trapped metal and cotton threads between the layers of cloth and layered them with painted fusible bonding web. These layered fabrics were then attached to 18-count canvas for stability. To create the impression of cloud motion, a minimal number of stitches were employed, using silk thread that blended closely with the background color. Slight tonal variations in thread color were used to suggest the varying reflections of the setting sun off the "clouds." The water and its reflection of light were created by using an open stem stitch and three colors of silk thread. Nubby wool threads were couched down at irregular intervals to create the dried shrubs and grasses in the forefront of the lake. Beads, both shiny and matte, were used to suggest depth, shadow and texture in the foreground. |
