This published pattern was used by my local ANG chapter as a teaching piece. We took turns working small areas and then teaching the stitches to the chapter members as part of the program after our general meetings. Several of our members finished this piece, some stitching it on18-ct mono canvas and others on congress cloth. The original instructions provided for several monochromatic themes. I used congress cloth as the ground fabric and taupe as my primary color family, enhancing it with insets of teal. For me, this brought out the shape of the kimono and also provided an opportunity to play with shading. Some of the stitches are repeated and it was fascinating to watch a stitch change when a different color or shading was used. I continue to use this piece as a "sampler" for stitches to be considered in other needlepoint designs. The back of the kimono is lined with silk from Thailand, a gift from my close friend, Patricia Brandt, who is also a member of ANG. My nephew, Darren Brown, made the stand from a beautiful Peruvian wood. |
