Odyssey was designed by Susan Portra. I chose the blue palette from those available in the pattern. Threads are perle cotton, Patina, Fyre Werks, Balger, floss and beads. Stitches include basketweave, reverse basketweave, double oblique slav, four-way continental, smyrnas, web stitch, satin stitch, and french knots. The perimeter is finished with long satin stitches at uneven intervals which provides a unique edge for each person who stitches Odyssey. To complete my masterpiece, I took Susan's statement that the only way to finish the piece was by framing it (due to the long stitches) as a challenge. I created a fabric "frame" over a core board and padding, sewing the needlepoint to the cloth, and adding a wood dowel with a drapery tie back and tassels to complete the design. It was a bit scary, since this was my first attempt at finishing any needlepoint piece, but I felt it came out beautifully. |
