An Evening at the
Ritz is an exploration of using silk and metallic threads, sometimes in unusual ways. My design inspiration was a metallic leather embossed purse created by an Italian designer several years ago. I simplified the incredible intricacy of the embossed designs and repeated some motifs to support the rhythm and unity of the design.
Several types of metallics are used in the design, including a rather fine twisted thread that is gently separated into super fine strands. Multiple strands are then carefully laid for ultimate smoothness and sheen. Many of the bands contain motifs that require several stitching steps. The challenges of the piece are perfect for my using
An Evening at the Ritz as an advanced-intermediate class that explores silk and metal techniques.
When a teacher/designer develops a new class project, the project needs a suitable title. Since my basic purpose was to offer a class that culminates in a statement of ultimate elegance, I wanted the title to reflect that concept.
An Evening at the Ritz seemed perfect since I definitely equate The Ritz Hotel in Paris with elegance; in fact, I had a very special evening there with ANG Past-President, Myrl Good!
