Woman of the Desert Wind

Name: Mary Ellen Searcy Sahuarita AZ

Of course it is an original...

10”X12” MIXED MEDIA/FIBER: painted canvas, collage, xpandaprint, tyvek, silk fusion, beads.

The face of the woman is turned to the sky, listening to the songs of the wind. The warm breath of the summer wind blows in from the West. Life in the desert and mountains listen to the spirits.

Inspiration for this piece is the feel of the desert southwest, the colors, the history, the mountains, the spirit, and the rocks talking to me. What ancient woman walked where I walk? What ancient spirit saw the same mountains, flowers, winds, saw the same soft colors?

Techniques include painted canvas with petroglyph designs, a complex collage of xpandaprint, melted Tyvek, silk fusion, wrapped cords, dyed gauze, ribbon, beads, a free-form Bargello stitch and the face of a spirit. All of these techniques were integrated with beading to make a whole.
The edge of the piece has buttonhole lace over copper wire. It is then floated in a shallow shadow box frame.
