Stitcher’s comments:

One of my greatest pleasures in my retirement has been traveling abroad.  I spent about a month in Italy and this piece evoked such strong and wonderful memories for me that I knew I had to stitch it.  It is done in all cross stitch and back stitch using DMC floss.  There are a number of blended colors and there are many vertical and horizontal half stitches, all of which combine to give a wealth of detail and sense of depth to the piece.

I have stitched seven or eight of Mr. Clayton’s “International” series, but only of places I have visited and they always bring back such happy memories for me.  I have others that I want to stitch (as well as more places I want to visit, too). What a blessing it is to be able both to travel and then to stitch a lovely reminder of it.

I was honored that this piece was awarded an “honorable mention” ribbon in the independent project (non-professional) category at the ANG Seminar in Nashville.  It and the “Blue Ribbon Sampler” were my first-ever entries in a judged show or exhibit.  I am further honored that you have chosen this piece to go into the “What is Needlepoint?” section of the website
