Whimsical Wizards

Name: Cheri White

Designer: Truby—Truby Designs

When I found my first two wizard canvases, I had a real desire to stitch the pieces.  However the true “Whimsical Wizards” did not become a full work until I stumbled upon the third piece at the ANG seminar in Lexington, Kentucky.  I worked on all three canvases for over a year, working most specifically on perfecting my technique in using Marlitt, Soie d’Alger, Metallic, Very Velvet, and other multiple threads.

The first thing that drew me to these canvases was the large, clear sections of color.  I also found myself considering the many different thread options, in both the natural and man-made variations, that could be used.  When I was able to sit down and finally count the threads used, I found I had over a hundred different varieties, even more than I had originally planned.  It was a challenge to my abilities to use all of these threads, and have the piece turn out to be one of prize winning caliber.

After I had finished stitching the figures, I found myself feeling as though they were floating and I was unsettled with that fact.  I began pondering what type of flooring and/or background would be appropriate in this setting.  After many attempts, I was pleased with the diamond and pillar pattern which I choose to use on the finished piece.

My advice to any stitcher is to not give up.  Keep trying; keep working through different ideas, and processes.   Don’t be afraid to try something four or five times if that is what it takes to find the correct combination of stitches and threads.
