| Description: | On a summer visit to the Caribbean, Mary and her
husband saw the beautiful tropical fish swimming among
the coral. When she saw this etching in a magazine, Mary
cut it out and saved it for her idea file. When she
bought the silk sha with the woven pattern, she knew she
had the perfect combination of canvas and design. Mary
was able to find all the threads in silk and metallics at
the ANG Seminar in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. All of
these components enhance the whole concept of the design. Stitching this piece was an adventure in creativity, using all of the textures and colors of threads available to us today in the art of stitching. One stitch, one color, one texture leads to another. Mary felt that she could not stop, it was like a wonderland of colors. The fins and the tail have a sheer piece of light blue silk stitched to the canvas and then overstitched with the metallic threads. The veins are couched and in between there are random flat stitches. In framing this piece, a mirror was offset behind the stitching. Since there is no stitched background, the reflection created a luminous effect. You get the feeling that the little blue fish is actually swimming through the underwater ferns. |
