Pearlessence

Kay Stanis

30819 Saturday-Monday, August 8-10, 2020

The iridescence that pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive layers, which breaks up light falling on the surface.” (Wikipedia) We will interpret this layering in a literal way by working layer on layer, bringing the blossom to life. This class will explore a variety of techniques: chipping, S-ing, aerial couching with beads, plus the application of sequins with and without beads.

Four Square Diamonds

Susan Reed

20612 Thursday-Friday, August 6-7, 2020

Patterns, stitches, and various threads create this challenging design of four squares containing diamonds. The center crescent diamond is worked in hand-dyed and solid threads. Two background stitches in the squares subtly suggest two shapes: diamond and octagon. The softness of couched metallic braid and satin stitches that border the diamonds continues on to frame the herringbone pattern. This herringbone extends into the arms and is mirror-imaged for the square border. A quiet outer border of satin and shaded long-arm Greek cross stitches completes the design.

Through a Garden Window

Susan Reed

20912 Sunday-Monday, August 9-10, 2020

The vibrancy of color blossoms in this design. The Japanese braid, stitched in warm colors of silk, creates texture as the braid is mirror-imaged and rotated. To offset the texture, the background is stitched in various plies of silk to create secondary patterns of diamonds. Couched silk braid pulls in the main color and emphasizes the background diamonds. The colorful inner border, which echoes the vibrant motifs, is edged by long-armed Greek cross and finished with an outer row of Japanese braid.
