Would you like to create a free hanging or standing piece of artwork?  Bellefonte will accomplish that goal.  The base circle will be stitched using Gloriana’s Branch Coral and threads from Accentuate, Soie Perlee and others.  The rectangular piece is stitched in deep chocolate tones with oregano and coral.  The Diamond is stitched with a color palette based on Waterlilies Prickly Pear that will bring in the coral and greens to tie the three pieces together.  For additional sparkle and depth bicone cyrstals and beads will be added.

 O Holy Night

O Holy Night is a three-dimensional crèche scene inspired by a holiday greeting card.  The center stable portion features the holy family in a small stand-alone 3-D diorama.  The camels, kings and angels are stitched on two separate canvases that can be attached to the central stable with hinged jewelry findings.  The finished design features beading techniques as well as many textured stitches.  The class will also include hands-on finishing instructions that allow the student to finish the design themselves.

A single motif, a Greek key, and all six rainbow colors are intertwined to create an evocative and exciting design that nearly flies off the canvas.  An interlocked puzzle of shape and color, this wildly-linked maze is stitched with a dizzying array of threads in a wide range of color and fiber types.  Explore the intricacies of many canvas stitches, one square inch at a time; from simple canvas and laid-filling stitches to composite, needlepoint motifs. There is a choice of either a tan background or a light grey background.

The glow of a warm autumn day surrounds the hills and streams.  Butterflies and snails amble about the flowers, leaves, berries, mushrooms and rocks of the landscape.  The hillsides, waterfalls, trees and pools against the morning sky are worked in space-dyed silks in straight, satin, laid, and renaissance stitches and embellished with stone chips, seed beads and French knots.  The inner borders are worked in composite stitches.  These are joined in embellished waffle stitches outlined in Braids.  The outer borders are combinations of silk and metal techniques.

Dreamcatchers are used to protect a sleeper from nightmares.  I have always been fascinated with dreamcatchers which led me to design this piece.   This dreamcatcher, one of many types, represents the 13 phases of the moon which has 13 strings and 7 feathers.  In this design you will explore how to incorporate macramé, canvas painting, blending with overdyed threads, and using specialty stitches to create this one-of-a-kind dreamcatcher.  The types of stitches and threads add character and dimension to this piece.  Happy dreaming!!

Seventh in the series of seasonal samplers, October Treats is a collection of bright colors that gets us in the mood for fall and the fun of Halloween.  This project includes a wide variety of decorative needlepoint stitches and techniques.  The bold prints, patterns, and textures are accented with seed and Delica beads.  Ample supplies of threads are included so that samplers can be individualized and made more meaningful.

While walking through the meadow, I picked a bouquet of flowers, brought it home, put them into water in one of the canning jars my grandmother used and placed it in the window where it brightened up my kitchen.  The Mason Jar canvas from Maggie Co. will remind you of that childhood summer spent on the farm while you recreate the mason jar and flowers using embroidery stitches and ribbon work from a time gone by.  There is even a bee coming to check out your work.

Layers of threads and stitches make up the areas above and below the center ribbon of snowflakes and icicles created with beaded embroidery.  Icy colors of silks and metallics in a variety of textures are combined to create a winter wonderland.

Making Waves

Making Waves was born out of a desire to further explore creative ways of integrating curved lines into a needlepoint design while better understanding the challenge of how to incorporate these curved shapes onto a grid pattern.  Making Waves was the outcome of my learning process and artistic revolution.  String Art and needlepoint stitches are featured in this design and further embellished with glass beads, bugles and a Margarita.  Additional stitches explored will include Fleur-de-Lis, a variety of Jessicas, Sprats Head, Starfles, Braided Stitches, Trellis work and an Inverted Amadeus.

Beyond The Moon

Beyond the Moon was inspired by the late Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto.  My design is a tribute to him and where he spent most of his adult life.  The image is of a Native American woman looking at the moon and wondering what is beyond.  This piece was designed to illustrate the techniques of creating perspective and dimension in needlepoint.  To accomplish this, appliqué, blending with overdyed threads, beads, miniature wooden blades of grass, and specialty stitches are used.  The moon and planet are stitched in glow-in-the-dark threads.

 Golden Candles

Stitch these beautiful 3-D stand-up candles to use as a special decoration for many special events, such as a wedding, an anniversary, birthdays, or even ANG’s 50th Anniversary.  Adding a battery operated tea candle to the top of each stitched candle creates a special glow just like a real candle.  Each candle will be stitched and finished separately, but will tie together with threads and patterns. The stitches include complex combination stitches, as well as, old favorites. The embellishment on the large candle is a gorgeous filigree gold diamond.

Purple Passion is a beautiful embroidery piece worked in silks and metals with padding.  The leaves are gilded then stitched with silk and accented with small spangles. The stems and outline of the urn are lizardine and silk gimp.  The blackwork on the urn is in one strand of silk floss and #1 Japan gold.  A border is worked in one strand of silk gimp while the background is a darning pattern.  The techniques are satin, couching, chipping, attaching spangles, attaching check purl, blackwork and darning patterns.

This intermediate-level canvaswork design utilizes some simple and also interesting textured stitches such as the dimensional fleur-de-lis in the center, and other variations.  The concept of the harlequin theme is reflected in the black and white diamonds juxtaposed with the fleur-de-lis (think Jester’s crown), set inside diamond shapes outlined in black and white.  The smallest diamonds feature a variety of stitches.  There is also a play with the symmetry throughout, using repetition, opposites, and reversal of motifs.

Four geometric shapes linked together inside a many-sided enclosure is a simple description for this unique design.  Off-center window openings, glints of metallic threads, and complex composite stitching bring these simple shapes alive.  They almost look like gemstones glittering inside an octagon bracelet.  Simple components like the Mosaic and Scotch stitches are elevated and recombined with Gobelin- and Trellis-style stitches to form deep, complex textures in new ways.  Explore over-dyed threads and silk/metallic blends, as well as, old-fashioned Cotton Perle and stranded silk.

Evangeline is my homage to a poem written by Longfellow. It’s the story of an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love, Gabriel, set during the time of the expulsion of the Acadians from Acadia (Nova Scotia) to Louisiana. This study of diagonal, traditional and string art stitches is an opportunity to try different stitches and to see the versatility of these stitches. Some are old favorites; others will be brand new. The piece is surrounded by a layered border to give it a finished look.

Celebration Rose

A golden gossamer rose celebrates the 50th anniversary of ANG.  The celebratory rose has five petals.  It also has five rose hips that represent the seeds that ANG has sown for each decade.  The golden three-dimensional flower dances on a linen background.  The sumptuousness is enhanced by five marquises filled with navettes in sparkling crystals surrounded with check purl chipping.  Stumpwork appliquéd leaves and double-sided goldwork is combined with couching techniques for the petals. The finished piece can be displayed in a Sudbury octagonal box.

When the sun is high over the hot desert, the landscape seems to shimmer and sway from the heat.  This design captures that shimmer and sway with vibrant southwest colors creating a band sampler of the varying colors of the landscape and sky on a hot summery day.  The best stitches for horizontal, vertical and diagonal bands will be explored to create the different parts of the scenery.  The rich colors and patterns add to the luxury of Desert Sun. A touch of metallic to add the shimmer will be included.

Flame Sampler uses the beautiful flame stitch pattern, so similar to a favorite bargello one, and is the focal point of this Rozashi study.  Navy and rose with accents of gold are the main colors in this sampler.  The stitches used are ichi dan straight, line, ni dan straight, ni dan step, and san dan. The patterns are combinations of ichi dan, ni dan and san dan straight and step.  Traditional Rozashi threads are used.

A delightful silk ribbon sunset garden will be stitched in this encore presentation.  One can almost feel the warmth and peacefulness of the summer’s evening.  The focus of the class will be to apply the techniques of silk ribbon embroidery and surface stitching to a photo transfer.  Learn how to create dimension and texture, as well as, design perspective by using a variety of threads in varying weights and thicknesses, including 4mm and 7mm silk ribbons.

The heart’s symbolic power was central to Aztec culture. They considered it one of the body’s spiritual souls, home to a person’s feelings, intelligence, and spirit. In the past year I have re-discovered my love for Bargello but I wanted to take it a step further than the traditional.  To create a “flowing” pattern, students will learn how to manipulate the design to create a freeform type of Bargello pattern.  We use #3 Perle Cotton in this piece as it is thicker and the coverage is better.  The piece is further brought to life by the addition of metallic ribbon. The piece is surrounded by a layered border. This is traditional Bargello with a twist.

Inspired by the beautiful landscape art kimonos of Itchiku Kubota, the Kubota Kimono is the sixth in the artist’s series of kimonos after The Wright Kimono, Mackintosh Rose Kimono, Klimt Kimono, O’Keeffe Kimono, and Starry Starry Night Kimono.  The kimono features Japan’s Mt. Fuji in intricate embroidered detail. The stitches for this kimono are multi-layered stitches with detailed shading to create the feeling and depth of color of Kubota’s work.  The design can be done as the original, a kimono, or as a rectangle (with some design changes by student).

A beautiful desert sunrise is the inspiration for this piece.  The colors in the sky remind one of pink colored roses.  The Tudor Rose Stitch was incorporated into this piece for this reason.  In this class, you will create a sampler learning how to stitch both twisted and composite stitches.  We will be working with several types of threads including ribbon, single loop thread, silks, metallics, and beads.  Imagine stitching this sampler as the sun rises with the colors that bring the new day to light.

Earth Spiral is a new twist on the teaching of Ukrainian Whitework Insertion stitches. The spiral, a 12” long and 1” inch wide strip of diagonal rows of Ukrainian Whitework, is wound into a spiral and joined using Ukrainian Insertion Stitches. The Insertion stitches are traditionally used to join two pieces of fabric together usually in clothing such as a sleeve to a bodice.  This spiral is worked with the Insertion from Sokal, a three step Insertion.  Some of the stitches included are pulled double cable, eyelet, mosaic, faggot, and satin.

Butterflies flutter in the bright glistening sunshine.  The bright wings create a flash of a rainbow.  The two layers of foundation provide a dimensional experience. Seed beads and crystals are centered in the flowers on #18 silk interlock canvas which are on top of the butterfly’s wings.  It floats over the other butterflies of laid silk, which are embellished with sequins and beads.

Sugarplum Santa is the newest in a series of Santa ornaments loosely based on Polish glass Christmas ornaments.  This ornament, with a variety of rich and sparkling threads, includes Very Velvet, Ribbon Floss, Splendor Silk, Wool, Fuzzy Stuff, and Kreinik Metallics.  Stitches and techniques include basketweave, filling stitches, padded satin as well as beading techniques.

The distinctive color known as Tiffany Blue was selected by Charles Lewis Tiffany for the cover of the “Blue Book” that showcased the annual Tiffany jewelry collection beginning in 1845.  Women the world over are still able to identify a special gift from Tiffany’s by that iconic teal blue box tied up with a simple white ribbon.  This elegant heart-shaped ornament pays homage to that memory.  All tied up with a three-dimensional loom beaded bow, it would make a perfect gift for a special person in your life.
